I recently spend some quality time at Emerald Casino and Resort as part of a media visit.
After battling Friday-afternoon Gauteng traffic (which actually wasn’t as heavy as I anticipated – but then again, I didn’t do the driving), it was a relief to be greeted warmly by the friendly and efficient front desk staff. I need to mention at this early stage that our interaction with all the Emerald staff over the entire weekend was an absolute pleasure!
During a quick look around my room, a few things immediately caught my attention. Firstly, the Nespresso machine (yay caffeine), the electric sockets with ‘ready to charge’ two-point plugs and USB-ports (a big thumbs up for me), the big, comfy bed and the sunset view! I was keen to see more, but first, off to dinner!
On both nights of our stay, we dined at the High Stakes restaurant.
This restaurant is a short walk from the main hotel, and is located in the casino area. The menu is relatively small (although I personally prefer it that way, then you know that whatever is prepared there, is a specialty) and the wine list is concise as well, but with some real gems!
A sample of the dishes I tried over the weekend includes the calamari starter, baked camembert, prawn and chicken curry, seafood stew, chocolate mousse and creme caramel. So good!
After a delicious dinner, it was definitely time for bed!
The next morning, I woke up to this view, isn’t it stunning?
Overlooking the pool and the spa, you can almost see the banks of the Vaal River. I even spotted some wildlife roaming and grazing in the not too far distance. So calming and peaceful. (A tip: when booking your accommodation, ask for a room overlooking the pool area, it is absolutely lovely).
After a few cups of coffee and a very hearty breakfast, we were ready for a day full of exploration and activities.
Firstly, we did a tour of the conference facilities.
Emerald can accommodate up to 3000 delegates in the conference rooms. Air-conditioned, conveniently set up and with a professional conference team on hand, it sounds as if they can host any type of meeting – for intimate smaller groups or large conferences.
Now, to check out a few of the other accommodation options. Getting around at Emerald is made easy and convenient by the free on-site shuttle service. Our first stop was the Bush Lodges. The lodges are only a couple of kilometres from the main hotel area, but it feels as if you are transported to a pine forest in another part of the world.
There are quite a few other accommodation options on offer on Emerald’s premises as well, from camping to family-friendly self-catering accommodation.
After roaming around some more, we were ready for some fun and games!
The most popular resort attraction is the impressive Aquadome.
The Aquadome is under cover, with heated water pools, so it is perfect for fun and splashing all year round. What a great spot for a child-friendly birthday party!
In the immediate vicinity, there are some other entertainment and eatery options as well. This includes takeaways offerings for a quick bite to eat, sit-down restaurants, a fun Adventure Putt-putt course, tenpin bowling, etc.
So much to do, so little time! You may have to go back a few times to be able to tick all these experiences off your list.
If you are someone who relaxes by simply relaxing and enjoying the ambience, grab a drink at the bar, chill in the lounge area in front of cozy fire, relax in your room with a book, or sip a cocktail at one of the numerous restaurants, hanging out with friends or simply watch the world go by. Totally my kinda vibe!
The last day of our visit ended with a grande finale.
A Sunday lunch River Cruise on the Vaal River (operated by Liquid Lounge). This two-hour cruise was just what we needed to finish off this lovely weekend experience!
A buffet lunch, some drinks, live entertainment and the calming views of the Vaal River. What a way to spend a Sunday!
