Clara’s Barn: A Culinary Journey with Indigenous Ingredients
One of the highlights at Vergenoegd Löw is Clara’s Barn, a beautifully restored restaurant that offers a modern South African farm kitchen experience. Headed by the talented chef Drikus Brink, Clara’s Barn is renowned for its use of indigenous ingredients and seasonal produce. The menu is a celebration of South Africa’s rich culinary heritage, featuring dishes that are both innovative and deeply rooted in tradition.
I was thrilled to receive a wonderful delivery from Vergenoegd Löw and Clara’s Barn, including a recipe and ingredients to recreate this “Buchu and Lemongrass Granita” at home. Just another way to #AwakenTheSenses!
Here is the recipe if you want to try it as well – it is delicious! As a result of this recipe, buchu is my latest obsession.
Buchu and Lemongrass Granita
Ingredients
10g Buchu
2 Lemongrass stalks
2 Whole Lemons, nested and juiced
2 litre water
400g white sugar
Method
- Put the sugar, water and lemongrass on the stove on medium heat
2. Bring to simmer until the sugar is dissolved. Stir in the lemon juice and zest.
3. Strain through a sieve and freeze overnight in a flat container of baking tray.
4. Scrape the frozen granita with a fork until it looks like shaved ice. Serve immediately
The Merlot: A Testament to Quality and Craftsmanship

The unique soil composition imparts a distinctive character to the Merlot, making it a standout in the estate’s wine portfolio.
On the palate, the Vergenoegd Löw Merlot offers a harmonious blend of dark fruit flavors, with notes of plum, blackberry, and a hint of spice. Visit Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate
A visit to Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate is more than just a wine tasting; it’s an immersive experience that celebrates the best of South African culture, cuisine, and sustainability!
Living in Gauteng, we don’t always get the opportunity to experience all the Winelands has got to offer. A week or two ago we did make a point to visit this wine estate, especially to experience the “Indigenous Wine Pairing”. It was superb! More to come.
