Don Pedro is a popular South African cocktail that dates to the 1970s. It is apparently named after Dom Pedro I, the first emperor of Brazil, who was also known as Don Pedro IV, the king of Portugal. Although the name’s origin is unclear, some claim that a restaurant in Johannesburg with a Dom Pedro portrait on the wall served as inspiration. Others say it was a tribute to the Portuguese influence in South Africa.
Don Pedro is made with ice cream, cream (sometimes), and a liqueur or spirit of your choice. It is often served as a dessert drink after a meal or as a refreshing treat on a hot day. I am a big fan of simple but satisfying cocktails (the fewer ingredients, the better) you can make at home.
There are different variations of Don Pedro, depending on the type of liqueur you use. Having a whiff of Musgrave Spirits Copper Brandy Vanilla*, I just knew that it would be a perfect match, even more so in the Festive Don Pedro I had in mind.
*Now, a little more about the award-winning Musgrave Spirits Copper Brandy Vanilla. It is a flavour-infused brandy that is made from pot-still brandy aged for three years in oak barrels. It is subtly infused with African vanilla, which gives it a creamy and aromatic taste.
So, enter stage left: my very own Festive Don Pedro, which pairs perfectly with Musgrave Spirits Copper Brandy Vanilla. Ta-da! I am a big fan of simple but satisfying cocktails (the fewer ingredients, the better) you can make at home. This particular spirit is a flavor-infused brandy that has been aged in oak barrels and infused with African vanilla, resulting in a creamy and aromatic taste. It is delicious!
Now, let me share my recipe for the “Fruity and Decadent Festive Don Pedro”!
Ingredients:
– 3 scoops of vanilla ice cream, slightly softened
– 2 measures of Musgrave Spirits Copper Brandy Vanilla #gifted
– 1 Christmas Fruit Mince Pie
Instructions:
1. In a blender glass, combine the softened vanilla ice cream and Musgrave Spirits Copper Brandy Vanilla. You can use a blender for a smoother consistency, but I prefer whisking it with a dessert spoon for a more homemade touch.
2. Pour the ice cream and brandy mixture into a cocktail glass.
3. Finely chop half of the Christmas Fruit Mince Pie and sprinkle it over the ice cream mixture.
You might notice that the heavier fruity bits of the mince pie will sink to the bottom. Don’t worry, you can easily scoop them out with a spoon as you enjoy this divine “dessert in a glass”!
Indulge in this Fruity and Decadent Festive Don Pedro for a truly delightful and refreshing experience! Try it out and let me know what you think?
Do check out the Musgrave Spirits webpage for more Don Pedro and cocktail inspiration! And always, drink responsibly.
