Rummikub Memories
I can still remember the day my Dad bought #Rummikub home for the first time. He explained: “It is like Rummy with Bicycle cards, only better”. And yes, he was right! As from that day in the mid-eighties, Rummikub was a big part of December holiday family get-togethers. We would sit around my gran’s long dining room table with the cream-coloured Damask table-cloth; strategizing, planning, moving tiles around – until we actually could not keep our eyes open! And then continue the next evening after dinner. We played tournaments, played in teams, you name it. Such fantastic memories!
Play the game!
Naturally, I was thrilled when I got the opportunity to play again, after taking a Rummikub break for a good couple of years. In celebration of Rummikub’s 70th birthday, we are sharing the Rummikub Experience – how exciting! The box is bigger than what I remember, I think we had the “Classic” version.
Shaking the unopened box gently, I was thrilled to hear the gentle rattling of the tiles.
Opening the box excitedly, I immediately recognised the coloured numbers on the tiles, and impatiently tore the plastic bag open. Out of habit, started searching for the Joker tile! Just to look at it again. There are two Jokers in the game, a red one and a black one, and the Joker can be your best friend or your worst enemy. Use with caution – nudge, nudge, wink, wink!
Each box has got 4 tile racks and holders to display your tiles (for your eyes only of course), as well as a detailed set of rules that I quickly worked through to just remind myself of the basics!
And that was pretty much how we spent most of the day! Honing our Rummikub skills, I got into the swing of things very quickly.
Board games are such a fun way to spend quality time with friends and family, an activity 2020 has taught most of us to appreciate.
With the winner yelling “RUMMIKUB!” when they play their last tiles, it is often a sigh of relief of a “damn, I was so close!”. Now that is the Rummikub experience.
The range of Rummikub board games can be purchased from the following retailers: Toy Kingdom and Takealot. Or you can order it directly from Prima Toys: https://www.primatoys.co.za/rummikub
