Hungry at Hussar

I heard that Hussar Grill is spreading its wings and will be opening a new restaurant at Silverstar Casino.  Although I won’t be able to attend the launch evening, it reminded me of a totally decadent lunch we had at the Montecasino store a couple of months ago.  So that you know what to expect!

Our first visit to Hussar Grill was a good couple of years ago while we were on holiday in the Western Cape.  After a busy day of exploring the Winelands, we were in the mood for a classic steakhouse experience, with white linen tablecloths, a comprehensive wine list and yes – good steak.  Hussar offers all that – and more.  Way back then, there weren’t many (any?) Hussar Grills here in Gauteng, so we were happy to find them again at The Grove Shopping Centre – and also in Morningside and at Montecasino.

Last year this franchise celebrated its 55th birthday, so it was the perfect opportunity to share a long and lazy lunch.

One of Hussar’s top selling points, in my opinion, is the professional service and attention you receive. We arrived on a busy Sunday afternoon and were immediately shown to our table and made to feel at home.

And what makes you feel more at home than some perfectly spiced, slightly wet and fatty biltong.

This was seriously good, and when you add some fat olives and crispy sweet potato fries, you can just feel that this is the start of a beautiful meal.

With our taste buds fully activated, we moved on to starters.  The trio of escargots (snails) is something to write home about.

Quoting from the menu:  “Delectably drenched in three sauces – garlic butter; smoked paprika and rosemary compound butter; and blue cheese.”  Topped with melted cheese and a few slices of toasted bread to mop up the sauces. Totally decadent. The smoked paprika and rosemary butter was my favourite – if I HAVE to choose one. Snails are such a classic steakhouse dish!

When it comes to ordering mains, especially if you are there for the steak, you have so many options.

Firstly, you can choose exactly how you want your steak to be prepared (taken from Hussar Grill’s menu):

Hussar is known for their flame-grilled (at least) 28-day aged South African Class-A grain-fed beef. We were presented with a tray of steaks, showing all that’s on offer.

The most popular steaks available include rump, fillet, sirloin, rib-eye, fillet on the bone, sirloin on the bone and T-bone. This time there were even picanha and tomahawk steaks available!  Truly, any meat lover’s dream.

After we placed our order, it was time to sip some vino!  We tried Hussar’s very own 50th-anniversary release red blend.

This well-balanced blend of Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot was just the perfect accompaniment for the main meal to follow.

I ordered the retro classic Carpetbagger, a filet stuffed with smoked oysters and cheese. Topped with a wholegrain mustard sauce.  I don’t even like mustard that much, but this dish is just a gem!

My hubby went with the Chateaubriand (always a winner).  This fillet is topped with brandy and flambéed, and served with Béarnaise sauce.

Now, just because it is called ‘side dishes’ on the menu, it doesn’t mean that these bowls of deliciousness need to stand back for the meat dishes.

I loved the granitated corn, if I could eat more than I already did, I would have.

The oven-roasted veggies, pan-fried mushrooms and potato fries were equally delicious. Yes, this was quite a feast!

Believe it or not, this was still not the end.  The Hussar treats just kept coming!  After being tempted with the visuals of their popular Baked Cheesecake, Malva Pudding, Crème Brûlée and Chocolate Fondant…

Washed down with Hussar’s Signature Chocolate Martini, we were close to checking into one of Monte’s hotels for an afternoon nap!  Sunday lunch done deliciously decadent!

Although we went full ‘meat lover’ mode, Hussar Grill does have some seafood, poultry and vegetarian options as well.  So they do offer something for everyone.

Thanks to the staff and manager-on-duty at Hussar Montes.  This was one terrific treat!  That is why we keep coming back to Hussar Grill, service, quality and style.
