There is something about Babylonstoren….
Is it the fact that it is steeped in history, being one of the oldest Cape Dutch farms?
Is it the fact that it’s fruit, herb and veggie garden (all 3.5 hectares of it) is so well-known and awe-inspiring that you can book a one of the daily Garden Tours AND even buy a book wholly dedicated to the The Garden at Babylonstoren?
Is it the fact that it is home to one of the most critically acclaimed restaurants, Babel?
And don’t get me started on their award-winning wines! The list goes on and on!
If there is one wine farm that should be everyone’s ‘happy place’, it must be Babylonstoren!
The previous time we visited Babylonstoren was a good couple of years ago. At that stage their tasting room was under construction, so we didn’t taste any wines on that occasion. But the beautiful garden and the farm shop were more than enough to keep us busy and fascinated.
With our visit this time around, it was equally charming and captivating! We visited with our parents and they thoroughly enjoyed exploring the beautiful garden.
Around every nook and cranny, every twist and turn you are bound to found a pleasant surprise, I can’t tell you how breathtaking it is!
Next we explored the shop! If you are looking for something authentic, unique or totally gorgeous, you are bound to find it there….
Freshly baked artisanal bread, charcuterie, linen, preserves, cordial – simply stunning. Quality and unique products to come at a premium price, but I think it is so worth it.
By this time we were a tad exhausted (and thirsty) after all the walking and shopping, we decided that it is time for a wine tasting!
As mentioned previously, we didn’t do a wine tasting during our previous visit, so we were quite excited to see what the renovated tasting area look like. It is open and airy and even on a cold winter’s morning quite welcoming. I love these green tiles, it just add an extra ‘wow’ factor!
We tasted most of the Babylonstoren wines available, with the Chenin, Viognier, Babel and Nebukadnesar impressing as always. The tasting room staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and the cozy fireplace added to the charm of the experience.
We stocked up on some Babylonstoren wines while there, which inspired Noble Savage to do a food pairing. Read more here: https://socialsavage.co.za/2019/02/07/kitchen-at-the-end-of-the-universe-pap-en-wors/
